Monday Meta: Topic Redux

26 May 2008 1,100 views

Mondays? Making up excuses for missed connections.

I’d like to write here every day, but it’s just not going to happen. In the meantime, little two-week breaks from my rants provide opportunity to let new ideas and experiences marinate. We have a medium-sized circle of friends, and when I’m not playing with the girl, pounding away on a keyboard, or puttering about the garden, we’re usually socializing. And, even if those friends don’t have kids of their own — which most of them now do — they always have opinions on child-rearing. What’s a skepdad to do? Commentate on those ideas, of course.

So, as I let those ideas continue to work around my brain — and give myself some time to do more reading — here is a short list of my goals for the coming weeks:

1. The case of the China Doll? Kids aren’t as fragile as one might think. I don’t pretend they are, anyhow. And is there such as thing as “babying your baby”?

2. Vindicating Vaccinations? Yes we all know you’re crazy to jump on the anti-vaccination bandwagon, right? But indifference leaves the door open for misunderstanding the issues. “Erring on the side of caution” means following medical advice — not paranoia, right?

3. Cracking Chiropractic? What do you say to your friends when they tell you how wonderful chiropractic medicine can be? What do you say when they’re planning to have it done on their infant?

4. Books that make you go “Hmmmmmm…?” We all want our kids to feel loved, but what do you say to a book that literally tells the story of the Earth standing still and shouting for joy on the day they were born?

5. Toy dilemma? Why is that toy’s aren’t simple anymore. We just wanted something for her to use to stand. Instead, there is no oter choice than “blips, bleeps, blops” and a world of electronic noise makers. Oh, and did I mention how “educational” they are?

6. Following guidelines? Is there such a thing as getting too much advice? You can probably make an educated guess that my answer to this is a resounding “YES!”
